Sessink,P.J.M, Rolf, M. E., & Ryden, N.S. (1999). Evaluation of the PhaSeal® hazardous drug containment system. Hospital Pharmacy, 34(11): 1311-1317.

The study was conducted for one year in an outpatient oncology clinic. Drug preparation was completed outside of a biological safety cabinet (BSC) to confirm that the PhaSeal® system alone was capable of containing hazardous drug exposure. Cyclophosphamide and fluorouracil were the two drugs that were used to test the effectiveness of PhaSeal®. The results of the study demonstrated that there were no detectable levels of environmental contamination from cyclophosphamide or fluorouracil in the outpatient oncology clinic following one year of use of the PhaSeal®   system for preparation and administration of these drugs.  The research concludes that PhaSeal®   alone is capable of containing and preventing hazardous drug exposure to health care workers and their working environment.
